What’s the difference?

Whenever we face an electrical issue in our homes or office spaces, we usually call on a professional to come out and repair the problem; whatever it may be. Some repairs will be a bit more extensive than others, and may also require a more extensive scope of work to be performed to make repairs.

A Licensed Electrician is a skilled trades-person who has the ability to design, install, maintain, and repair most electrical systems in residential homes and commercial businesses. Licensed Electricians maintain the interior and exterior of residential homes, as well as for commercial businesses, to repair or upgrade lighting, industrial equipment, and various electrical wiring to ensure appliances and other electrical items operate safely and reliably.

To break it down, all Licensed Electricians should have the proper training to deal with these problematic electrical situations, using the safest; as well as the most effective measures to ensure the safety of themselves and that of their clients.

We here at Bolt Electric provide Electrical Service and Repair in and around the San Antonio, Texas area. Here are 3 levels of certification for electrical workers that would visit your residence or commercial business for Service and Repair - these 3 levels are:Apprentice,Journeyman, andMaster Electrician.

Let’s take a peek at each level. First up…

The Apprentice Electrician:

An apprentice Electrician, works alongside experienced Electricians, building up knowledge, skills, and responsibility and gaining qualifications. Apprenticeships are also an invaluable way of gaining general knowledge of service and repair experience.

Electrician Apprentice Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist a journeyman electrician and follow instructions
  • Prepare and clean work areas
  • Carry and deliver materials
  • Install, repair, and maintain various electrical wiring systems and equipment
  • Use measuring equipment and hand tools to perform conduit work
  • Follow safety codes and building regulations
  • Electrician Apprentice Requirements and Qualifications

That brings us to our next level…

The Journeyman Electrician:

Journeyman electricians are responsible for the installation of electrical frameworks, as well as detecting and correcting any faults found in existing electrical systems. Most journeyman electricians work in residences and commercial offices.

A successful Journeyman Electrician, should be very well versed in “Critical Thinking” with experience in all areas of electrical work. An extraordinary Journeyman Electrician will demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and should have the capacity to mentor to Apprentices on the team. Besides the above mentioned duties and responsibilities, the Journeyman Electrician should have more advances skillsets such as:

Journeyman Electrician Duties and Responsibilities:

  • 5+ years of experience as an electrician; extensive experience in both commercial and residential work
  • Install, repair, and maintain various electrical wiring systems and equipment

And finally; we come to the Master Electrician…

The Master Electrician:

A Master Electrician has progressed well beyond the Apprentice Electrician’s knowledge, and moved passed the Journeyman Electrician phase of their career.  A Master Electrician installs, maintains, and repairs the electrical systems in residential homes or in commercial properties. They also supervise the work performed by Journeymen and Apprentices’; as well as to ensure proper staffing, and monitor the quality of submitted work documentation.

A Journeyman Electrician will not even have the same experience or licenses that a Master Electrician holds. Journeymen Electricians may be able to work independently, but do not have complete autonomy like that of the
