Electric Vehicle Charger Installation

The more you know, the better…

If you had to take a guess at what would be the best way to save on fuel costs, and to be more energy independent, as well as doing your part to help in reducing harmful fuel emissions, you might just  come to the conclusion of purchasing an electric vehicle.

What with fuel prices rising beyond belief in recent months, we here at Bolt Electric have received many calls for folks researching the cost to install EV Car Chargers for their residential homes, but before you consider having an EV Car Charger installed there are a few things you'll want to ponder.

Let’s take a look….

When purchasing a new fully electric vehicle, the dealership you purchase your vehicle from will most likely provide you with a car charging port adapter, which can be plugged into any receptacle in your home to charge up your electric vehicle. Having said that, that particular type of car charger will usually take a good amount of time to charge your new electric vehicle, and in today’s world,  that just won’t do!

And sure…there are EV car charging locations in and around town, but thankfully you can also consider the option of having one installed at your residence. That’s where we begin asking the important questions such as; “What might something like that cost?” Or “What all is involved for the install? “

There are a few other very important options to consider…

Will you need more power to accommodate an EV Car Charger?

To make certain your vehicle is ready to go with a shorter charging time, you will require an EV Charger fully installed in your Garage or Driveway; for the convenience of nighttime charging at your residence.

This will more than likely require a 240 Volt Receptacle, and the charger you’re having installed should be a level 2 EV car charger; that would be able to support at least 30 amps. That way, your vehicle is ready to go after a few short hours of charging. In-fact, you will get about 30 miles after charging for about an hour!

Installing an EV charger is a great way to achieve these charging requirements, but some folks will opt to install a 240 volt receptacle only; which makes for a longer charging period. This particular choice typically comes down to the individual preference; as well as cost.

Where should you place your new EV Car Charger?

Your best option for placement would be the most convenient location that is close to where you will park your vehicle. To make certain there is adequate room, measure the distance between where you would like the charger installed; and your cars charging port. Another item to consider; is to let your electrician know if you would require more length for the charger cord, or if you have the need to accommodate multiple Electric vehicles.

We highly recommend assistance from a licensed and qualified electrician to make certain all of the key details for installation are considered. After a brief inspection to make sure there is room in the service panel for the installation; as well to be in-line with the current NEC electrical code, they can provide you with cost, as well as to communicate the details of installation for your EV Car Charger.
