Electrical Do’s and Do Not’s
DIY or Call an Electrical Professional…?

We here at Bolt Electric receive a lot of calls regarding the need for electrical maintenance or electrical repairs. It is after all what we do. However, on occasion, we receive calls for us to come out and make electrical repairs to an electrical DIY repair/ project that has gone awry.
Let’s take a look at why the majority of the time; electrical repair work should be completed by a licensed and experienced electrician.
Repairs on repairs:
We see it all too often. A Do it yourself project that hasn’t gone quite as expected. You’re swapping out a switch for a ceiling fan, and boom, the breaker trips when you try to turn it on. Now your switch is fried, the breaker won’t reset, and your ceiling fan is smoking. Now you’ll have to call out an electrician to assist with the new repairs. What started out as an “easy” fix, has been upgraded to an urgent and multi-leveled repair list.
Accidents can happen:
You call that trusted relative or handy neighbor who will often work in trade. What friend or relative would pass up a good meal in exchange for a few small household repairs? Only replacing a breaker, what could go wrong? Except it does; and now they’ve been shocked and injured. Who will pay for their medical expenses, or missed wages? Things to consider. Calling out an experienced professional electrical contractor will be fully insured, and if something goes wrong, you are not held responsible for their injuries or lost wages.
A Licensed Electrician will not only know the ins and outs of troubleshooting an electrical repair job, but will also have an ongoing awareness of new technologies; that will give you peace of mind regarding your home's electrical safety, as well as proving economically sound advice on everything electrical in your home or business.
Guess who else considers a Licensed Electrician to be significant in the electrical service and repair of your home or business? Your Insurance Carrier. That’s right! If an accident should occur, or something detrimental as the result of a Licensed Electrician’s service, you can prove to your insurance company that you did your part by hiring someone who was a licensed professional, and took all of the necessary precautions regarding safety and compliance.
A Handyman or doing it yourself is an affordable solution to any electrical project, but should be only considered for very minor renovations. With technological advancements being what they are these days, it can be difficult to understand the electrical needs for repairs or installations, and since hiring a handyman is a personal service, most handymen will not be licensed in the electrical field, which means that any and all accidents or any damage caused during your project; will be entirely your responsibility.
While bringing in a Licensed Electrician will cost a little more than calling out a Handyman, or doing it yourself, Licensed Electricians offer a level of professionalism that will aide in the completion your project in a much safer and more efficient manner.
Licensed Electricians are also bonded as well as insured, which means that you can rest assured, knowing that your home and your safety are completely protected during the entirety of your repair or project.
