Electrician ~VS~ Handyman ~VS~ D.I.Y.
Who should you call?
When the electrical system in your home is compromised, it can become unpredictable, and often quite worrisome as well as frustrating!
You may hear a buzzing behind a switch when you turn a light on, or you might experience an electrical burning smell. Perhaps you have a breaker that trips when you run the dishwasher and microwave simultaneously. All of these scenarios should be diagnosed and repaired to avoid further damage to your appliances; as well as your home.
Instead of a service repair, maybe you’d like to add a few new plugs to a room to accommodate some new gadgets, or perhaps you want to update the lighting in your kitchen, or install that new ceiling fan on your back porch.
Regardless of the repairs or upgrades, below are a few really sound reasons why you’d want to call on a licensed professional to get the job done.
Electrician:
An electrician is a licensed professional tradesman, specializing in complex and otherwise dangerous electrical projects,
meeting both building and electrical codes. Electricians can be employed in the installation of new electrical components or the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure.
Handyman:
a person employed to do occasional domestic repairs and minor renovations.
D.Y.I. (Do It Yourself):
The activity of decorating, building, and making repairs at home by oneself rather than employing a professional.
Decisions,
Decisions...
We all like to save a little money, right? Especially when we can simply open up a “How To” tutorial video and do a project ourselves.
Maybe we can call out a Handyman, or we can always depend on that trusted relative or handy neighbor who will often work in trade? I mean, what friend or relative would pass up a good meal in exchange for a few small household repairs?
Here’s the thing, what if your neighbor gets an electrical shock while replacing that buzzing switch plate, or your handy relative falls off of your 12 foot ladder while hanging your new ceiling fan? What happens if an unlicensed Handyman gets injured while working on your electrical panel, and ends up in the hospital for several days? Who will pay for those Medical Bills? Who will take care of their missed wages? Something to ponder...
Even a well established and licensed electrician can have an accident on the job however, electricity is dangerous, and has the potential to be quite deadly! That’s just 2 (of many) reasons why they are insured as licensed Electricians in the field. If an unexpected injury happens during an Electrician's service repair, you, as the hiring customer, are not held liable for that individual’s injury, pain/ suffering, or even their lost wages!
Knowing their Craft.
A Licensed Electrician will not only know the ins and outs of any electrical job, but will also have an ongoing awareness of new technologies; that could give you peace of mind regarding your home's electrical safety, as well as proving economically sound advice on everything electrical in your home or business.
Not only are they well versed in electrical code, they are also keenly aware of your city requirements on whether a Permit must be pulled to do certain types of electrical work.
They also know how and when to schedule City Inspections for those larger jobs; such as adding new electrical panels, upgrading them, or replacing them altogether. Even your City has to make certain that every precaution was taken by a Licensed Electrician to ensure the safety of the home or building involved with such projects.
If you don’t have these permits and safety inspections, you might face large City fines or worse, the work may not be up to electrical code and therefore; a serious safety or fire hazard, and then where would your savings be?
Guess who else considers a Licensed Electrician to be significant in the electrical service and repair of your home or business? Your Insurance Carrier.
That’s right! If an accident should occur, or something detrimental as the result of a Licensed Electrician’s service, you can prove to your insurance company that you did your part by hiring someone who was a licensed professional, and took all of the necessary precautions regarding safety and compliance.
A Handyman is an affordable solution to any D.I.Y. (Do it yourself) project, but should be only brought in for minor renovations or domestic repair services. Since hiring a handyman is a personal service, most handymen will not be licensed in the electrical field, which means that any and all accidents or any damage caused during your project; will be entirely your responsibility.
While bringing in a Licensed Electrician might cost a little more than calling out a Handyman, or doing it yourself, Licensed Electricians offer a level of professionalism that will aide in the completion your project in a more efficient manner.
Licensed Electricians are also bonded as well as insured, which means that you can rest assured, knowing that your home and your safety are completely protected during the entirety of your project.
